EXCERPT from "Monday Morning Motivation" The Book!

Introduction

A New Day

Recently I was talking to a friend and fellow motivator about Monday mornings at his job. He shared that it was the absolute worst time of the week. This was due to the fact that everyone was always upset and depressed because they didn’t want to be there. As positive as he is, one can’t help but be affected by such negative energy; as it is contagious. Finally, he told me that when my Monday Morning Motivation message pops up in his inbox, it ends up turning his whole day around.

When I decided to do these messages I never could have imagined the impact that they would make. More than one person has shared with me that research shows that suicide occurs more often on Mondays than any other day of the week because of that sense of dread and depression that is often referred to as the “Monday Morning Blues.” Each of these readers, who have never met and live in different parts of the world, all said that they feel like these messages are making an impact and a difference when it comes to those statistics. If a little inspiration on Monday morning lifts one heavy spirit or saves one life, then I feel that I have done my job.

I look at Monday in an entirely different way. I truly believe that our health, wealth and how we feel about ourselves depends heavily upon how we perceive things. For example, when I hear the term Monday Morning Blues, I think of how beautiful a blue sky is or that blue is my favorite color as opposed to the negative connotation that the word blue usually holds. Instead of looking at Monday in a dreadful way, I look at it as a new day and an opportunity for a new beginning… as a gift that we are given each week.

I remember when I was a child and I wanted to ask my mother for something, I can’t recall what it was, but I prefaced it with, “Mom, when it’s 1984 again can I….”  She laughed and let me know that years don’t come back around like months and days do. We may not be able to get the years back, but there will always be another Monday.

Every day is a new day and an opportunity to start all over again, but I feel that Mondays are the most powerful because they are the beginning.

How often do we think or say that we wish we had the opportunity to do something all over again? Monday gives us that. Today I challenge you to think about ways to make the most of Mondays.  I’ll start you off with a few, but the rest is up to you…

Re-Commit To a Life-Style Change
Notice that I didn’t say diet. Focus on fitness in a way that is manageable and realistic enough for you to maintain for life.

Do Something Differently Than You Did Last Week
Use the weekend as a time to reflect on issues that came up for you throughout the week.  Once you’ve completed that task, use Monday as a day to learn from your mistakes by leaving them behind and moving forward with new goals and action steps.

Begin the Journey of Letting Something Go That Is Not Good For You
Perhaps you want to quit smoking or give up sweets. Monday is a great day to begin and even if you slip up during the week, that’s OK because another Monday is on the way for you to give it another try.

Let’s make each Monday a new day and if you find yourself getting off track as the week progresses, just remember…another Monday is only seven days away.

How to Use This Book
You are more than welcome to read this book all at once, but for maximum impact it is designed to be read one chapter per week for a year. Read each chapter first thing in the morning every Monday when you wake up, before you do anything else, or as soon as you arrive at the office, before you begin your work for the day.

Apply the topic of the message for each week to your life by focusing on the challenge posed or questions asked at the end of each chapter. Continue to apply and review the concepts, ideas and suggestions that you read in the motivational message for the entire week.

After reading the message, or at the end of the week, reflect on your progress. This can be done alone or with a close friend, family member, co-worker or group. Encourage the person that you share your thoughts with to read the book right along with you. (See the Book Club Guide at the end of the book.)

If you decide to reflect alone, record your thoughts, your answers to the questions, or the action steps that you plan to take to meet the challenges in a journal.

Now sit back, relax and enjoy the read!

Book Review: In The Pink: A Woman's Guide To Being a Girl by Ramona Prater

I had the privilege of watching Ramona Prater bring the words of her book to life when I saw her speak at an event a few months ago. What stood out to me was that she had a very different view point than that which we are used to hearing when it comes to women. The common message is usually that women should be strong and independent.  While her book doesn’t necessarily say that this way of thinking is wrong, it definitely shakes up the idea by addressing some very powerful truths.

It all boils down to us being honest with ourselves.  Many of us say we don’t need a man, and technically this may be true, but at the end of the day, most of us want a man, want a healthy relationship and want a marriage that works.

Throughout the book there are several instances where she forces us to be honest with ourselves by making bold statements and observations about our behaviors and choices as women. The first statement that caught my attention in her speech and then again in her book was when she said, quite simply, “…No man wants…another man.” This statement was in reference to the idea that feminine freedom means that we are so strong and powerful that we don’t need a man, yet we continue to date men while simultaneously asserting these beliefs. A partnership is all about balance and while two people in a relationship may not necessarily need one another to survive, it’s definitely nice to share your life with someone that adds value to it.

In her chapter entitled, “Damsels in Distress” she makes mention of something that several people think, but rarely say, “There are women who have decided on their own that they will take on ‘Motherhood’ without the consent of a man, you know who you are…and you should be ashamed of yourself.” This bold statement brings light to a situation where women often take on the role of victim. Her words almost dare them instead to take responsibility for their choices. This is just one of several examples where she calls us out on our stuff.

The two quotes that I’ve shared with you are merely a taste of how “In the Pink” is a feisty, daring and powerful read. Ramona Prater is not afraid to make bold and powerful statements of truth that make us really take inventory of what it means to be a woman. It makes me think of something that I heard someone say in a relationship workshop that I’ll never forget. The instructor said something like, “All men aren’t dogs. If we’ve been in several relationships that have failed, we are the only common denominator in all of those relationships. So maybe it’s time to take a look at ourselves.”

This is exactly what Ms. Prater’s book does…she forces us to take an honest look at ourselves as women. As you read her book you will be challenged to think about what you really want, what you really need and what you really need to do to get those things. She explores the power of practicing silence, our tendency to enable our sons to the point where they can’t reach their full potential as men, submission and self-care.

This is a quick yet powerful book that I think all women should read. Whether you agree or disagree with her way of thinking, this work is thought provoking and would make for a great catalyst for discussion among women, as well as between men and women thus making it an excellent book club selection.

Ber-Henda Williams presents “My Words: How I Found My Truth!”  For September’s Poetry, Pages & Scribes series

Southfield, MI – When a woman can find her own voice and understand what power lies in that discovery; she has become a Siren. In Greek Myths, Sirens were either winged creatures or lived in the sea. The voice of the Siren was seductive and hypnotic. Ber-Henda Williams will be joined by six outstanding women writers and poets this month. This will be the prelude to Williams’ second installment of poetry, Siren Songs, a collection of poems centered on the exploration various myths, archetypes, and femlore. Poetic luminaries include: Noted scholar, educator, poet Aurora Harris, who has recently released her collection of poem entitled, Solitude of Five Black Suns, author and Poet, Monica Marie Jones, Dimonique Boyd, One Single Rose, Rhonda Welsh, and Louisa Fara’Moan. Not only are they speaking their “truth” but donating a portion of the proceeds they receive from book sales that night to area charities whom support women and girls in need.

“I believe that woman’s voice is her most powerful asset and as a member of a universal sisterhood, it is important that we uplift each other and what better way than with our words”, says Williams, Poetry, Pages and Scribes’ host and founder.  “These women have dedicated their lives to art of writing but have tied their hearts to community.”

The poets will be performing after the open mic session, which starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 1st, at the Southfield Public Library, 26300 Evergreen Road.

Each woman has chosen a charity to support, they include: Compassion International, Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, Project S.A.F.E. (Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment) H.I.S. Agency (Helping Individuals Succeed) and The Power of Girlhood. Each woman is intimately tied to each one of these organizations. Dimonique Boyd, is in support of Karmanos because, “When my mom had a breast cancer scare we were fortunate enough to go to the right place the first time. We weren’t as well informed as we should have been, and many women aren’t either, so I want to support awareness and research.”

Poetry, Pages and Scribes series, has done a number of charitable efforts in the past such as, Take Back the Night Ann Arbor, a silent art auction for Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, The American Cancer Society Relay for Life, The Power of Girlhood, a forum for young women and girls and this October they will be at Lawrence Technical University for Gilda’s Club.
